Being on call means that I am available at the end of the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from your 38th week of your pregnancy until your baby is welcomed into the world. It also means that I am available to come out to you within the time we have agreed when you feel that you need me.
When the deposit is paid, all my birth clients are given a special number to call when they think they may be in labour. This is my on-call mobile. I only have this number switched on during an on-call period (although my usual numbers are always on), the reason for having a special number for while I'm on call is so that I (and those who are with me) know when that phone rings I have to leave what I am doing, and start to get ready to come out to you. I would rather have a call at 1am to say that you think you may be in labour than a 4am "I need you now". The more you keep me informed the more relaxed we can all be.
Being on call means that I have to stay within a specified time of your home or hospital. For me this means that I am unable to visit the majority of my family. I also have to ask my childcare to be on-call too. I do not make definite plans for during on-call times, and may have to leave special events for my family and children. My commitment to be your Doula means that I put your needs before my family for those few weeks, if my children are ill or have a school event, then Ian is incharge of our children. Being a Doula is not just a job it is a commitment from me and my family and friends to support you and your family.
